Frequently Ask Questions
What makes Amply unique?
Amply is the fastest way to do an accurate, rebate-ready Manual J. Scan a home room-by-room with your iPad Pro, and Amply builds the load calc as you go — no tape measure, no clipboard, no office time afterward.
What sets us apart:
- Independently owned and operated. We're not owned by private equity or a giant corporation. When you email support, a founder reads it.
- No internet required. Scanning and load calcs run completely offline — basements, crawlspaces, and rural areas included.
- Simpler and easier to use than the competition. We make Manual J and building science easy and accessible.
- Better price. No annual contract required. No annual increase built into your contract. Compare us to the competition!
If Amply hasn't paid for itself in the first month, you're doing it wrong. :)
Can Amply be used for more than just heat pumps?
A resounding yes! A Manual J load calculation is about the home - it has nothing to do with the equipment. It is simply a calculation of the heat losses and gains of the building. Since it is about the home, you can use Amply to run load calculation on any home regardless of what the existing equipment is or if you are proposing a new conventional system like furnaces, boilers, traditional ACs, etc. We see the industry moving toward heat pumps so we’re building more bells and whistles focused on heat pumps, but the core load calculation ability of Amply is good for any home and all HVAC equipment.
What kind of iPad do I need?
You need an Apple iPad Pro with LiDAR. Wi-Fi or cellular both work — Amply runs offline.
Models that work:
- iPad Pro 11" — 4th generation or newer
- iPad Pro 12.9" — 4th, 5th, or 6th generation
- iPad Pro 13" — M4 (7th generation)
We recommend the newer models — faster, more accurate scans. We don't recommend the 3rd generation; it struggles with some common home geometries (like curved walls). 256GB of storage is plenty.

What does onboarding and support look like?
You'll be scanning homes lickety split. Here's the path:
- When you pay, you'll receive an automated email to download and log into the app.
- Watch the new-user training video (~15 minutes). It covers the basics so you can hit the ground running.
- Scan a room in your own house. The best way to learn is by doing.
- Optional: book a live 1:1 onboarding session with my co-founder, Eric, for a modest fee ($50). He'll review best practices, answer your questions, and make sure you're set up for success.
Beyond that: our Help Center (Home | Amply Energy Help Center ) has short how-to articles and videos, and you can always reply to any email from us — a founder reads it. Please don't be shy with feedback — we want the good, the bad, and especially the ugly.
Does Amply perform ACCA-certified Manual J load calculations?
Yes! We went through a rigorous 9-month audit with the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), to certify that our product adheres to the Manual J protocol. Learn more.
What does Amply cost?
Two simple options, per user:
- Yearly: $2,160/user/year — save 10% (works out to $180/user/month)
- Monthly: $200/user/month — 1-month minimum, cancel anytime

Does it do Manual S?
Yes — we put together a simple Manual S Excel spreadsheet that's super easy to use and should meet most requirements. It works with your Amply load data and handles both ducted and ductless systems, with cold-climate heat pump performance in mind.
- Download it for free: Amply Energy | Free Heat Pump Selection Tool
- Quick how-to video if you want to see it in action: Amply - Variable Speed Heat Pump Sizing - Manual S w/ Dual Fuel option
It's not built into the software yet — but we will build it in soon.
Does Amply do Manual D for duct design?
Plenty of our customers pair Amply with their existing duct design workflow. Amply's room-by-room loads give you exactly what you need to feed into a Manual D tool. You can also use our 3D model of the home to sketch out your duct layout.
For a full Manual D — including static pressure and specific duct sizing — the answer is not today, and honestly not for a while. We're focused on making the load calc and equipment selection experience the best in the industry!
Is Amply ACCA-certified and will my city or utility program accept it?
Yes. Amply performs certified ACCA Manual J load calculations. We went through a rigorous 9-month audit with the Air Conditioning Contractors of America to certify that our product adheres to the Manual J protocol — read about it here: Amply earns ACCA's Powered by Manual J® certification
Our output is accepted by major rebate programs — including Mass Save and NYS Clean Heat — and contractors use Amply reports for utility and municipal submissions every day. The practical answer: if your program accepts a Manual J, Amply works. If you have a specific program in mind, ask us — chances are one of our customers already submits to it.
Does Amply need internet or cell service?
NO! Scanning and load calculations work completely offline — no internet, no cell service needed. That's a big deal in basements, attics, crawlspaces, and rural areas where connectivity dies.
That's also why either iPad works: Wi-Fi-only or cellular. Your projects sync when you're back online.
Does Amply integrate with my field service management system (e.g., ServiceTitan)?
We don't have direct API integrations with FSM platforms today. Here's the honest workflow: Amply generates clean PDF reports, and uploading them to ServiceTitan (or any FSM) takes seconds. We call it "fast upload". Tons of our customers run this exact workflow daily.
How does scanning actually work?
Basically: stand in the middle of the room and spin around. The LiDAR extends about 15 feet, so for larger rooms you may have to walk around the perimeter.
With scanning, smooth is fast. You don't have to go slow — but you also don't have to go up and down a bunch of times. Smoothly get the corners of the room and key features like windows, and Amply will automatically fill in the rest.
Scan one room at a time, and Amply stitches the rooms into a whole-home 3D model and floor plan. Enter the address first and Amply pulls real estate data to get the home's age, which sets smart starting assumptions for insulation and construction. Adjust anything you want, pick equipment, and generate your report — all on site if you like.
Does Amply handle knee walls, vaulted ceilings, or other irregular geometry?
Yes. For vaulted and cathedral ceilings, scan the room as best you can and mark the ceiling as "cathedral" — Amply handles the adjustment. Super-high ceilings can be tricky for LiDAR range; getting directly beneath them helps.
Knee-wall attic spaces and other odd geometries are exactly why we recommend newer iPad Pros — the newer LiDAR handles irregular shapes (even curved walls) noticeably better.
If you hit a geometry that stumps you, send it to us. We love the weird ones.
Where do the construction assumptions come from and can I change them?
Amply creates dynamic construction assumptions based on the age and location of the home — we pull real estate data from the address to set smart starting values for insulation, windows, and air leakage.
And yes — everything is adjustable. Walls, windows, ceilings, floors: change any assumption on any surface, and you can set your own defaults so Amply starts where you want it to. The defaults get you 90% there fast; you fine-tune the rest.
Can my whole team use one Amply account?
Amply is licensed per user — each team member gets their own login. Just send us a name, email, and cell number for each user and we'll get everyone set up right away.
We don't recommend login sharing — it can risk data loss when two people work under one account. We don't have team volume discounts, and we don't have an admin login mode yet, but that is on our roadmap.
Does Amply have branded 3D models?
Not today. The 3D models in Amply are generic representations — right size and placement, not brand-specific artwork. That keeps the design conversation focused on the system layout and lets the homeowner see exactly what's being proposed and where it goes.
That said — branded 3D equipment models are on our roadmap. Stay tuned.
Can I use Amply for apartment buildings or light commercial spaces?
Our customers use Amply on multifamily buildings regularly — scan each unit like a home.
Light commercial — yes. Small shops, bookstores, small churches: Amply works anywhere ACCA Manual J protocols apply. What we can't do is complex commercial buildings that require Manual N.
The definition of "commercial" is vague at best, so here's the practical test: if your utility or rebate program says Manual J is acceptable for the building, Amply works.
Can I use Amply just to double check someone else's load calc?
Absolutely — it's one of the fastest sanity checks in the business. Scan the home, let Amply build the load, and compare. The easiest Manual J inputs to verify are the ones contractors skip: real measurements, real window areas, real insulation values. A LiDAR scan doesn't skip anything.
If a competitor's bid is built on an oversized load calc, a 30-minute scan gives you the evidence — and the 3D model to show the homeowner why your number is right.
